Curve C Black Wall Portrait Tutorial

Welcome to Our First GR Studio Space Wall Feature Tutorial

Have you ever struggled with shooting portraits on a black backdrop? I struggled initially and finally figured out a method that worked for me. Black backdrops are great for headshots, dramatic portraits, and even product photography.

What's covered in the PDF Tutorial

  • Shooting on a black backdrop for a mid and tight portrait

  • Shooting on a black backdrop for a 3/4 and full-body portrait

Important Takeaways

Shooting on a black backdrop is about keeping your subject's main lighting off the background. So the farther you can get the subject away from the background, the less chance you will spill light on it. It also allows you to make your light more flattering on your subject.

Shout Out
Every month we are looking to feature one of our renters so we can all learn more about each other and be supportive and encouraging. If you want to be featured in one of the monthly tutorials, please email learning@nikdegraaf.com with a lighting question you are struggling with, and I will add you to the list. If you’re chosen, you will be featured in the tutorial and learn how to solve your lighting challenge. You must be a current renter at GR Studio Space to be featured. Since I did not have someone to feature this month, enjoy my self-portrait; I call it: w/Green Toaster.

I take portraits and toy toasters seriously

A quick note: Our aim in creating this tutorial is to develop assets that help our renters here at GR Studio Space. Our goal is to build a community of supportive photographers that lean into each other's experience and lift each other up. This setup is designed to show current renters of GR Studio Space a potential way to utilize space and equipment included in their rentals.
